Call for Abstracts: The Africa Caribbean Studies Conference, Nigeria Experience 2024
Title: Cultivating Positive Reconnections Conference: ” Return, Knowledge Exchange,
Development, Growth & Sustainability: Africa & the Caribbean”
We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the international conference on
“Return, Knowledge Exchange, Development, Growth & Sustainability: Africa & the Caribbean”
which will be held on December 17 th -21 st in Lagos city and December 26-29 in Calabar city,
Nigeria.
Theme:
The conference aims to explore the multifaceted aspects of return, exchange, growth,
development and sustainability within the context of Africa and the Caribbean. We invite
researchers, scholars, policymakers, entrepreneurs and practitioners from various disciplines to
contribute their insights and perspectives on the interplay between these regions, highlighting
the opportunities and challenges they present for socio-economic, environmental, cultural and
heritage progress.
Topics of Interest:
We welcome papers that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
Return Migration and Diaspora:
The theme explores the phenomenon of return migration and its implications for both Africa
and the Caribbean. It examines the experiences, motivations, and contributions of individuals
who return to their countries of origin, bringing with them skills, knowledge, and resources
acquired abroad. The focus is on understanding how this process impacts economic
development, cultural exchange, and social transformation in both regions.
Trade and Economic Collaboration:
This aspect delves into the potential for trade, investment, and entrepreneurship between
Africa and the Caribbean. It explores opportunities for fostering economic cooperation,
strengthening bilateral and regional trade agreements, and promoting sustainable economic
growth. The theme aims to identify sectors with high potential for collaboration and strategies
for harnessing the economic synergies between these regions.
Cultural Exchange,Heritage and Identity:
The theme acknowledges the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Africa and the Caribbean. It
examines the historical, artistic, linguistic, and social ties that connect these regions and
explores the ways in which their cultures have influenced each other. The focus is on
understanding the dynamics of cultural exchange, preserving cultural identities, and celebrating
the contributions of African and Caribbean cultures to global diversity.
Education and Knowledge Transfer:
This aspect highlights collaborative efforts in education, research, and knowledge exchange
between Africa and the Caribbean. It explores initiatives aimed at strengthening educational
institutions, fostering research collaborations, and promoting the transfer of knowledge and
expertise. The theme aims to identify best practices and innovative approaches to enhance
educational opportunities and capacity building in both regions.
Sustainability:
This aspect focuses on strategies for fostering sustainable development and overall
sustainability in Africa and the Caribbean. It examines the environmental challenges faced by
both regions and explores approaches to address them, such as promoting research
in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and agribusiness, and amplification
of conservation practices. The theme also considers inclusive development, social justice, and
the empowerment of marginalized communities as integral components of sustainable
development. In this aspect, the participatory inclusion lens ‘Nothing About Us, Without Us’
would be applied.
Governance and Policy Frameworks:
The theme encompasses an examination of governance models, policy frameworks, and
institutional mechanisms for development in Africa and the Caribbean. It explores comparative
analyses of governance structures, public policies, and legal frameworks that contribute to or
hinder progress in both regions. The aim is to identify effective governance practices and policy
interventions that can support sustainable development and address common challenges.
By exploring these interconnected aspects, the conference aims to deepen our understanding
of the relationship between Africa and the Caribbean, identify opportunities for collaboration,
and contribute to the sustainable growth and development of both regions.
Abstracts: Interested participants are requested to submit an abstract (maximum 700 words)
outlining the paper’s objectives, methodology, and key findings.
